Get your measurements right and you'll be able to achieve a beautiful look with curtains neatly framing your windows when open and providing full coverage when closed. We recommend the following:
- Sketch each of your windows and write each measurement on the sketch as you go
- Measure in millimeters with a reliable metal tape measure
- Follow the builders' rule of thumb - measure twice!
Measure Track Width
Measure the full width of your curtain track or rod. Do not include any decorative ends (finials) in this measurement.
If you do not already have a curtain track or rod installed you will need to work out how long you want your track or rod to be.
- Measure the full width of the window, including any frame or architrave.
- Add space for the curtains to be drawn to either side of the window. We recommend you add the larger of:
- 40cm (20cm each side) or
- 20% of the window measurement
Measure Curtain Drop
If you are using track
Measure from the top of the track.
If you do not yet have track installed you will need to work out where you will want your track installed. The most common position is with the top edge of the track flush with the top edge of the architrave or, for a window with no architrave, 4cm above the top edge of the window frame.
If you are using a rod or rod track
Measure from underneath the rod.
If you do not yet have a rod installed you will need to work out where you will want your rod installed. The most common position is with the bottom of the rod positioned 20cm above the top edge of the window frame or architrave.
Where to measure to
Measure to your desired curtain length. Some common options are:
- Sitting on the window sill - suits windows with sills that protrude out from the wall.
- Sitting just below the sill - minimise light leakage by taking your curtains at least 15cm below the sill or architrave.
- To the floor - recommended to maximise the insulative benefit of your curtains.
- "Breaking" on the floor - Add a further 2cm to the floor measurement to achieve a slight "break" in the fabric that makes any unevenness in the floor less noticeable.
- "Puddling" on the floor - Add 20cm to achieve a European style "puddling" effect. This looks best with lined curtains with a soft drape.
